How To Get A Real Estate License In California

Meet The Basic Requirements
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old. (you can start courses before 18)
- Residency: You must be a legal U.S. resident or authorized to work in the U.S.
- Integrity: Demonstrate honesty and trustworthiness, as a background check is required.

Complete Pre-license Education
- Enroll online at an approved California real estate school.
- California requires 135 hours of coursework, including:
- Real Estate Principles (45 hours)
- Real Estate Practice (45 hours)
- An elective, such as Legal Aspects of Real Estate or Real Estate Finance (45 hours)

Pass the Real Estate Exam
- Apply to take the real estate exam through the Department of Real Estate (DRE).
- Study and prepare using exam prep questions & attending a crash course.
- You’ll need a score of at least 70% to pass.

Time to Complete Courses
Minimum Time Needed
The minimum time to complete courses according to the Department of Real Estate (DRE) is 18 calendar days per course from the date you receive your material.

Maximum Time Allowed
The maximum time allowed for completion of your course is 1 year from the date of enrollment. Completion of the course means taking and passing the course final examination.
Once you have successfully completed the qualifying pre-license course final exams, you will receive an email with your official Course Completion Certificate along with a link to download the state examination application. From the day you mail your application to the DRE, it usually takes 6 to 8 weeks for DRE processing and to get a state exam test date. This waiting period can vary depending on how many applicants are applying for the state exam at any given time.
